There are two meetings when the Executive Committee can consider applications: early October and late April.

The deadlines for applications to reach the Society in order to be placed on the agenda for these meetings are September 30th and April 1st.

Each meeting has a budget for conference grants of £2500. The maximum grant given for any event will be £1000.

The Society will provide grants only for conferences that are to be held in the UK.

Applications for funding for a graduate conference and to provide subsidies for students to attend a professional conference are particularly welcome. Invitation-only conferences will generally receive a low priority, although all applications will be considered on their merits.

Eligibility for application

You need not be a member of the Society in order to apply.

Student organisers of conferences may apply.

Information required

  1. The aims and purpose(s) of the conference.
  2. The dates and location.
  3. Whether the conference is part of a series.
  4. Whether the conference will be open or invitation-only. If invitation-only, please provide an explanation of why this is the case.
  5. Expected number of participants, and where they are likely to be from.
  6. Number of speakers, and where they are likely to be from.
  7. If there are invited speakers, their names and why they have been invited.
  8. An itemised estimation of the total expenditure.
  9. An itemised estimation of income from delegates/participants.
  10. Details of other sources of funding applied for, including the amounts and whether any of these applications have been successful.
  11. Whether there is a specific purpose for the grant; e.g. to subsidise travel expenses and if, so, for whom.
  12. Whether a previous application has been made. If so, details of when and how much was granted must be provided.
  13. The role or status of the applicant (i.e. on what basis they are authorised to apply for a grant for the conference in question).
  14. Contact details, including email address.
  15. If one exists, the web-site address of the conference.
  16. The amount of grant requested.

Conditions attached to the receipt of a grant

  1. That the Society's support (although, obviously, not the amount) be acknowledged in all publicity about the conference (web-site, CFP's etc.).
  2. No later than three months after the conference, a conference report should be sent to the Society. This should include itemised accounts for the conference finances and an assessment of how well the conference met the aims and purpose(s) set out in the application for a grant.
  3. If the conference makes a profit, an appropriate proportion shall be remitted to the Society (taking into account the amounts granted by other bodies).
  4. Finally, any sum granted can be paid only into an official conference account or departmental account. Payment cannot be made to specific individuals.
