The Virtual issue
The Aristotelian Society’s Virtual Issue is an online publication. Each volume is theme-based, collecting together classic papers from the archives of the Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society and the Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume that address the chosen theme.
This year’s 2025-6 Virtual Special Issue ‘Ten Women Presidents of the Aristotelian Society‘ celebrates some central figures in the history of twentieth century philosophy – all of whom are women. Guest Editors Ellie Robson and Peter West have collected and republished the first ten Inaugural Addresses delivered by the first ten women Presidents of the Aristotelian Society, from 1930-2001. The papers collected in this Special Issue span large swathes of philosophical terrain and represent philosophical views and approaches – and philosophers – of diverse types. They are idealists, ethicists, feminists, political philosophers, linguists, aestheticians, philosophers of psychology, mind, and action. They comment on the most pressing philosophical issues of their time and produce some cornerstone papers of twentieth century philosophy. Some of this work has been unduly overlooked. We hope this Special Issue will go some way in highlighting the important and in some cases under-appreciated work that has been published by women philosophers of the Aristotelian Society, reaching back almost 100 years.
